The National Socialist concentration camp Sachsenhausen, opened in 1936, served as training grounds for KZ commanding officers and observation staff. About 200.000 prisoners were taken there. In August 1941 alone, up to 18.000 Soviet prisoners of war were killed at Sachsenhausen.
After 1945, the concentration camp was used as prison camp until 1948, when the GDR closed the camp and used it as part of their military barracks.
